June 9, 2013 "TRANSFORMED” - The Story of The Day of Pentecost, and Introduction to 5th Grade

By George Nielsen

This week which is our first full class period for our new fifth graders, covered a brief introduction to 5th grade Sunday School and the Lesson from Bible Adventures on the coming of Holy Spirit to the disciples on the Day of Pentecost.

Our Introduction to 5th Grade covered this information:
We have HIGH Expectations for the 5th graders; they are a very capable group of students. They have been told “You’re not ‘little kids’ anymore” now that they are 5th graders, and that 5th grade is more challenging than what they experienced in 4th grade.

Teaching moves to the Next Level,
  • Not only learning Bible stories, but also an emphasis on Discipleship Training
  • Lessons from:
    • Bible Adventures
    • Sunday School that Clicks
    • The Bible is God’s Message for Me’ - Special Curriculum material presented in one session each quarter, which covers five major topics from the Bible.

There is an Achievement Points program, where students receive credit for class attendance, knowing and reciting Memory Verses, and for completing written class assignments.

The information shown above was presented to the students in-class.

Parents should also note this additional introductory information which was not mentioned in class.
In 5th grade, we have specific learning objectives for the students.    They fall into two general categories, Commitment Objectives and Christian Education Objectives.   Our second issue of the Parent Newsletter will include a copy of these objectives (to be published in early Fall).    The phrases that are used in class to remind students about these two objectives are: “Come to Jesus” and be “a Young Disciple of Jesus”.

Parents should note that one hour per week of Sunday School is just the start toward meeting those objectives.  Parents will need to ensure that their child is putting in the effort to learn the lessons, and give them help when needed.    Parents can refer to lesson summaries that will be published online (written specifically for parents after each class and posted during the week following the class session).   There also generally are take-home papers that students receive in class.

Sunday School that Clicks is supplemental material that is used in some of the lessons.  This will usually be a video or printed material that is used as a discussion-starter or object lesson, that is related to the spiritual focus of the lesson.

IMPACT is the discipleship group for 5th and 6th grade students, which meets twice per month on Sundays, beginning in the fall.   The group leader is Mr. B., our Children’s Pastor, Curtis Batchelder.

In 5th grade, we have a special Bible Reading program that will start later in June and continue throughout the Sunday School year to May, 2014.   This reading is included as part of the Achievement Points program, but it also has its own “Readers are Leaders” quarterly award.   The details will be published in the Parents Newsletter and also announced in class.  The 5th grade special Bible Reading program is focused on two New Testament books and three very significant Psalms: the Gospel of Luke, Acts of the Apostles, Psalms 51, 23, and 24.   It has both a reading component and a writing component.   Students are permitted to receive help from parents on the written work.

Parents can contact the 5th grade teacher by email at rcc.5gr@gmail.com

Beginning with the June 9th class, weekly posts will be made.

Transformed is the Bible Adventures lesson covering Acts, Chapter 2, and the events of the Day of Pentecost.    We began with a brief explanation about the Spring Feasts of the Lord, how this particular Feast day occurred 50 days after Jesus was resurrected from the dead, and 10 days after His Ascension into Heaven.   This event is remembered and commemorated annually on the seventh Sunday after the Resurrection; this was on May 19th this year.

The Lesson’s Emphasis was on:
  1. The Coming of the Holy Spirit, which Jesus had promised to the disciples (in Acts, chapter one) so that the disciples were Filled with the Holy Spirit [they were not drunk]
  2. Release of the power of God, first through miracles, and then the convicting power that came from the preaching of God’s Word by Peter
  3. Launch of the Church, and the beginning of a new era, “the Church age” (in fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, from Joel, chapter 2), starting with 3,000 people who repented and were baptized that same day.

The lesson handout also had more passages from Acts 2 and commentary on those verses printed on the back of the page.   There was not sufficient time to cover this material in class.   Students were instructed to look over this information at home.    The Day of Pentecost lesson is taught every year, during 5th grade, as a brief overview during the first class in June, and then again the following May, on the actual date of Pentecost Sunday.

The Memory Verses for this week are Acts 2: 1 & 4.
1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. …
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
