July 28, 2013 "The Bible is God's Message for Me" -- Session 1

 By George Nielsen

This week we are beginning to present the Summer session of the extra Bible Curriculum materials for 5th graders.   Today, and continuing next week, the Lesson is "The Bible is God's Message for Me" (“BGMM”).   The Summer session includes an Overview, and presentation of the topics “God" and "Man".

The Overview is given to introduce the idea that this big Book, the Holy Bible, does have a thematic unity, and this unity can be described by studying what the Bible says about 5 major topics.   The topics are God, Man, Sin, Salvation, and the Kingdom of God.   In addition, during the Overview, the point was made that all the stories in the Bible, that are woven together to make up The Story, are there for a purpose.  We can learn from the people we read about, both the good and the bad examples.

The topic
GOD is the crucial topic for this curriculum.   Because all or most of the students have been nurtured by their parents to believe in God, now as 5th graders the students need to be trained and prepared to understand what they have been raised to believe and to handle opposition to that belief.     In today's class, the revelation of God Almighty, Yahweh, as a Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, was presented.

The material from our Class Notes Handout about the various ideas and beliefs about God was mentioned.    This material will also be presented again next week, and will be reviewed again as part of the next BGMM session later this year.
  • Students attending public schools are taught in science classes that our world and the universe came about through natural physical processes, without any supernatural being taking part in, or controlling, these processes.   The theories scientists have constructed, evolution and the big bang theory, to describe the natural processes are taught as fact, even though they are not supported by proof and are speculations of people who refuse to consider anything supernatural.
  • In 5th grade, we teach Creation by God Almighty, as presented in the Holy Bible, and challenge the scientific theories, declaring them false.

This is a quote from the Class Notes sheet given to each student:
The Spiritual world is real. God Almighty does exist; He dwells in heaven.  Holy angels, and God’s Holy Spirit, the devil and evil spirits all exist and are active in our world.
This statement, to affirm what the Holy Bible teaches about the spiritual world, is one of the major learning objectives in 5th grade.   Teachers in public schools present their naturalism-based views as Fact; in our Christian Education ministry at RCC, we present the teachings of the Holy Bible as Fact.

We will continue Session 1 of BGMM next week, with more on the topic 'God', and then present 'Man'.     We closed out our class with some discussion and then practice of our Memory Verses, followed by our prayers.    The assigned Memory Verses are shown below.

None of the students attending on July 28th had memorized the verse assigned in the previous class, 2 Timothy 3:16.   As a result, it is being reassigned for this week.   The importance of this verse was emphasized in today’s class, and an explanation of the word “rebuking” was given.    This is the Weekly verse, to be quizzed again on August 4th.    There also is a new Emphasis Memory Verse, Psalm 19:1, and we explained in class why King David would have been inspired to write this verse.   Psalm 19: 1 will continue as the Emphasis verse for the remainder of August, even after the BGMM Session 1 is concluded.

The Memory Verse re-assigned this week is 2 Timothy 3:16.
16 All Scripture is God-breathed, and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.

--------------------------------

This week we are assigning the second Emphasis Memory Verse, Psalm 19: 1 (NIV).  This verse can be recited for each class during the month of August.

1  The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.
